01 — From marker to signature
Context tests signal stability.
Fixation duration or saccade amplitude may be associated with a trait in a particular task. Signature status then requires testing whether this association remains stable across tasks, stimuli and moments. An isolated difference may come from the image, instruction, fatigue or time of observation.
The paper defines the Gaze-based Signature of Personality (GSP) as a set of personality-related markers that remain robust across multiple exploration contexts. Context thereby becomes the primary validation instrument.
02 — The protocol
Varying task, stimulus and time.
The study involved 91 participants. Eye movements were recorded at 1,000 Hz as participants viewed images and webpages, either freely or while searching for a target. Personality was measured with the 45-item French Big Five Inventory (BFI-Fr), a questionnaire producing a continuous score for each of the five broad traits.
The analyses combined spatial indicators — fixation dispersion and saccade amplitude —, temporal indicators — fixation duration —, and dynamic indicators. Among the latter, the K coefficient combines fixation duration and saccade amplitude to place exploration between a global ambient mode and a more local focal mode. Data were also divided into one-second bins to observe how effects evolved during exploration.
03 — What emerged
The number of robust signatures varies across traits.
In this protocol, Conscientiousness, Agreeableness and Neuroticism showed the largest number of robust signatures. Conscientiousness was notably associated with deeper processing and wider visuospatial attention across several conditions. Agreeableness and Neuroticism showed other configurations combining processing depth, gaze stability and attentional scope.
Openness to Experience and Extraversion produced fewer signatures. The laboratory setting — evaluative tasks and time constraints — made some traits more observable and reduced the visibility of other potential relationships.
04 — The right interpretation
Interpret a signature with its uncertainty level.
The study shows that a signature may emerge within a few seconds and roughly thirty eye movements. Effects were established at sample level and remain dependent on measurement conditions, population and recording quality.
The scientific value of GSP lies in its method: turning continuous behavior into testable hypotheses, then searching for what survives variation. Responsible applications require external validation, bias monitoring, informed participants and uses proportionate to model uncertainty.
